What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a specialized caregiver dedicated to supporting new families through the early days and weeks following childbirth. This support encompasses a variety of tasks aimed at nurturing the family as a whole—facilitating newborn care, offering breastfeeding or bottle-feeding support, and providing evidence-based education on baby and maternal health. A postpartum doula also provides emotional support, helping to ease the transition into new parental roles and alleviate the common concerns that come with this significant life change

While postpartum doulas provide extensive support to new families, there are certain services they do not offer. Postpartum doulas do not perform medical tasks; they do not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatments, or conduct clinical assessments. Additionally, while they assist with light household tasks related to the baby's care and the well-being of mom, they are not housekeepers and do not do deep cleaning or handle heavy household chores. Their focus is on providing emotional support, practical baby care assistance, and educational guidance.
